After enjoying creating the opening title sequence for footloose so much, we decided our film would be set in the 80's. In order for the time period our film was set in to be obvious, I needed to do some research to incorporate items and fashion that were popular in the 80's, into our film.
Popular items in the 80's
The BMX.
One of the items that made a continuous reappearance during my research was the BMX. This may be because in the 80's E.T was released and the main character in the 80's rode around with E.T on the front of his bike.
The Rubik's cube.
The Rubik's cube was created in the 80's and was famous for the challenge it presented.
The Pogo ball.
The Pogo ball consisted of a platform with a hole cut into it which had an oval ball put into the hole. The aim was to stand on the platform and jump with the Pogo ball between your feet. Just like the Rubik's cube it was difficult to do so became popular. It was also advertised on the TV a lot and since the 80's was the era in which almost every family had a TV, a lot of children had one.
The Sony Walkman cassette player.
Because of the increasing popularity of music amongst teenagers, a portable device in which you could listen to music was perfect. This is because teenagers didn't have a car, and stereos were big and chunky; therefore the cassette player was a popular practical option.
Fashion.
Men
Adidas Originals
Doc Martins
Reebok high tops
As visible above Reebok, adidas and Doc martin were popular brands of shoes to wear. A lot of the popular mens shoes in the 80's were chunky. These shoes were popular as famous icons such as band members from "Wham" wore similar items.
Hair
The mullet
Big hair
Wet look and pompadour
This style made the mens hair look wet even when it was dry. It was likely popular because Elvis wore it and it made mens hair look shiny; therefore making it eye catching.
Learning comment
From this we have a clear idea on what we plan to use in our film.We have also learnt how representation of characters is key when appealing to our target audience. The way the characters are presented also illustrates the time period in which the film is set. This is why it is important for the characters to wear popular 80's style clothing.
