Title sequence analysis

Learning comment

From this i have learnt that the text comes in the following order (Usually):

  • Film studio producer
  • Other film studio producer
  • Director
  • Main actor/actress
  • Other actor/ actresses in order of appearance
  • Film title
This suggests that the names shown is in order of importance to the making of the movie. For example the film studio  producer is shown before the director because they created the film, and the director is shown before the actor because they write the script and tell the actor what to do and how to act.

Learning comment

From this i have learnt that:

  • Colour is used to hint at the events in a film.
  • Binary opposition is used to form a base line for the narrative.
  • Sound is used to introduce the main character and hint towards what drives the narrative.
  • Costume is also used to illustrate a binary opposition which may drive the narrative.

A continuity sequence of 20 different shots.

 Storyboard
We created a story board of the video we would be filming. This helped us film as 20 shots is a lot of filming and it would have been easy to forget the order of the shots if we had not organised tham and wrote them down beforehand.

What went well

Match on action
The match on action was fluid and fitted together perfectly. This is because we shot each scene longer than needed.

Sound
There was no unnecessary background noise and the noise created from the bag opening was loud enough to hear. The music was also appropriate to the narrative.

Camera
The camera was steady in all the shots.

Lighting
The lighting was good and we could see everything in each scene clearly.

Improvements to make

Camera
We could have made the film shorter if we had cut each shot down a bit. it also would have been more interesting if the pace of the shots were faster.

Learning comment

From this I have learnt that it is always best to overshoot each shot when attempting match on action. I have also learnt that a faster paced scene makes a video more interesting. I now know to make sure the shots in my opening sequence aren't too long otherwise it could be boring.

What went well

Audio
we managed to mute the audio for the dancing clips. It was also very easy for us to add the footloose song onto the video.

Editing
Because we filmed each person dancing for 10 or more seconds, we were able to cut the clips to the necessary size, with no clips being to short. It also allowed us to speed clips up if necessary whilst still keeping them the appropriate length.

Text
Once i discovered how to put the text onto i movie it got easier to edit. The text overplayed onto iMovie with no green background visible and it did stand out against the shite background despite my doubts. Finding the text was also very easy as it was already a font on Adobe After Effects. The font was an identical replica to the font used in the original.

Issues

Props
One of the issues we faced was not having enough shoes. There were 23 pairs of shoes but we only brought in 12 pairs. To overcome this issue we reused certain pairs of shoes, but changed the socks. Another issue we faced was getting shoes similar to the ones in the video. We couldn't overcome this issue, but we did use shoes that were at least the same colour or style.

Lighting
Because we did the filming on different days the lighting was different. To overcome this issue we edited the brightness in each of the shots. However, you are still abe to tell that there is a difference so if we were to film again we would likely film in a room with no natural light and use artificial light. The low key lighting in all the shots meant that the shoes were difficult to see (especially black shoes). To overcome this problem we increased the brightness of the shots on iMovie.

Setting
One of the issues we faced was setting. We couldn't find an area with a plain simple backdrop and flooring. In the end we had to create a space to film in. We used a whiteboard for the flooring and found a simple whitewash wall in one of the classrooms to create a simple background. However, if we had more time we would have found a back drop and flooring more similar to the original opening.

Text
We created the text on adobe after effects. However, we couldn't put the footage we filmed of the shoes into adobe after effects. This meant that I had to change the background of the text to a green screen, so that i could screen shot it, and then remove all green areas in IMovie.
